Cascadia Renewables
A Community-Driven Island Microgrid
One of the northernmost parts of the continental U.S., Orcas Island is roughly three hours (by car and ferry) from downtown Seattle and is connected to the mainland by a single undersea transmission line. Extreme weather events and grid outages can leave locals stranded for extended periods of time.
We are very pleased with the excellent service provided by Mayfield Renewables. Their expertise in designing solar PV systems, solar plus storage microgrids, and assisting with microgrid feasibility studies has been invaluable to our projects. The team’s professionalism, attention to detail, and innovative solutions have consistently exceeded expectations and has aided many of our successful grant applications.
We truly enjoy collaborating with Mayfield’s team because of their creativity and professionalism. The unique nature of our projects requires additional thoughtfulness, and Mayfield consistently delivers innovative, reliable designs that work seamlessly.
We’ve enjoyed working with Mayfield in every respect, and have done so for a long time because of the depth of knowledge they bring, their willingness to engage in conceptual design discussion, and their rapid turnaround when it’s time to do drawings. We routinely refer them to our partners because they’re a reliable partner that can help avoid the many pitfalls of microgrid implementation.
During the feasibility process for our community resilience center, the Mayfield team provided invaluable expertise and skills, and was patient and easy to work with. The quality of the feasibility study may have been the difference maker in our successful application for construction funding.
Working with the Mayfield engineering team has been an awesome experience. Their team is professional, knowledgeable, and dedicated to quality. They communicate proactively and integrate seamlessly with our processes, ensuring our projects are completed on time and to the highest standards.
I wanted to express our heartfelt gratitude for your invaluable support on our recent tribal community project application. The technical expertise your team contributed through Mayfield’s feasibility study not only brought clarity and understanding to the project’s approach but also significantly elevated its presentation and credibility on paper.

To protect their uniquely vulnerable infrastructure, the San Juan County Emergency Management (SJCEM) agency identified the Orcas Center as a facility that could function as a resiliency hub in an emergency. The location was conveniently central and well known community gathering place. The issue, however, was that the Orcas Center did not have the energy resources required to function as an island-able microgrid system. With a site (Orcas Center) and primary goal (energy resilience) in mind, SJCEM set out to find the right mix of distributed energy resources to achieve key performance benchmarks while staying within space and budgetary constraints. In other words, this island facility was interested in “islanding” from the grid.

The Cost of Complexity: Why the C&I Multi-DER Market Demands a Development Standard
The commercial and industrial (C&I) renewable energy sector is experiencing a paradox. Driven by data center load growth, grid capacity constraints, and community resilience targets, the demand for distributed energy resources (DERs) is at the front end of a significant upward trajectory. Yet, the C&I mid-market lacks a widely accepted industry playbook to develop these […]

When Does a Renewable Energy Project Need Owner’s Engineering Support?
Introduction Understanding what Owner's Engineering is only answers half the question. The harder part for a system owner is knowing exactly when to bring that expertise into a project. Renewable energy assets are built to perform for 25 to 30 years, and the decisions made in the first few months of a project can lock […]
