Code Corner: 2020 NEC 705.11 (A) and (B)

Welcome to Code Corner from Mayfield renewables, today we’re going to talk more about NEC 2020 section 705.11 (A) and (B), where you’ll find the requirements for making PV connections on the supply side. First, when we say “supply-side”, what we’re talking about is the supply side of the main overcurrent device, sometimes referred to as a line side tap, even though they are technically supply-side connections. Trying to use that language consistently is important, and now the code has given us some very good rules on how to make these connections. So let’s jump in and first talk about 705.11(A).

Code Corner: NFPA 855 ESS Unit Spacing Limitations

In this edition of Code Corner, we talk about NFPA 855, Standard for the Installation of Stationary Energy Storage Systems. In particular, spacing requirements and limitations for energy storage systems (ESS). NFPA 855 sets the rules in residential settings for each energy storage unit—how many kWh you can have per unit and the spacing requirements between those units. First, let’s start with the language and then we’ll explain what this means. In Section 15.5 of NFPA 855, we learn that individual ESS units shall be separated from each other by a minimum of three feet, unless smaller separation distances are documented to be adequate and approved by the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) based on large-scale fire testing.

Navigating NEC Codes for Solar and Solar-Plus-Storage

Electricians and solar installers are required to navigate several codes and standards when installing solar photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage systems (ESS). Solar and energy storage equipment manufacturers introduce new equipment at seemingly lightning speed, and it can be difficult to keep on top of all the requirements. This article highlights the key codes and some of the top sections contractors working with solar PV and battery storage should be familiar with.

Fire Codes and NFPA 855 for Energy Storage Systems

Fire codes and standards inform energy storage system design and installation and serve as a backstop to protect homes, families, commercial facilities, and personnel, including our solar-plus-storage businesses. It is crucial to understand which codes and standards apply to any given project, as well as why they were put in place to begin with.
